For the deist in your family

Postby Jessica » Sat Dec 06, 2014 3:35 pm

For the deists amongst us, or those just interested, a few authors in various disciplines. I have tried to limit those who wrote after Darwin. I have also included those who are influenced by deism. They don't necessarily identify as deists but in some cases all you have to do is pick up one of their works and think, 'bloody hell! Is this a deist, or what'? Or whatever is your preferred idiom.

Paul Davies.
Ernest Rutherford.
Max Planck.
Kenneth R. Miller.
Wernher Von Braun.
Stephen J. Gould.
Anthony Flew. (He went the other way from atheism to deism).
(And the last one which doesn't fit in as it's a single book but it influenced me to discover and learn about the religion of reason for myself)
Honest To God by Bishop John Robinson.

Note : This is a very personal list and I have done my best not to proselyte. If I have done so it is inadvertent and breaking the habit is very hard! Just think of them as great writers on great subjects.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? (Epicurus circa:300 BC)
