Interesting stuff. Nagel is a funny bird: he's sort of a fundy atheistic teleologist- he insists that evolution has goals, but doesn't believe in gods.

That said, it seems to me that much of this debate is a tempest in a teacup that has more to do with different definitions than with different ideas. The evidence for what Kaufmann calls "order for free", the apparent tendency in certain circumstances for order to evolve and become more complex in predictable ways, could still be the result of blind natural forces with no teleology, no goals. Order can demonstrably evolve from the bottom up with no direction other than natural selection. If Nagel doesn't believe that there is some sort of sentience with foresight behind evolution, what's the beef? I don't see any disagreement here.
