Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution

Postby Quasar » Wed May 23, 2012 4:20 am

As everyone who's been following the original SMRT-Only thread knows, I'm getting set up to publically release my pet project for the last few years: Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution, an (as the name suggests) evolution simulator. I figured there's no point in hiding it away in the SMRT-only section anymore. Besides, the original thread was getting rediculously long.

This release is at the Proof Of Concept stage, which is to say it's still got a long way to go to unlock even a fraction of it's potential (a game like this, by it's very nature, has a lot of potential), but you can already see legitimate Natural Selection and Evolution from first principles, as well as a variety of predicted effects of evolution like Punctuated Equilibrium and Convergent Evolution.

SMRT has been instrumental in helping me get this far: the discussions and suggestions in the other thread were invaluable during design, and knowing that people were interested in my progress is part of the reason I kept coming back to it, even after I'd dropped it for months to work on other projects. So thanks guys, and I hope you enjoy the very first release of many to come.

Release Date is Sunday, the 27th May, 2012

As always, the development blog is at www.speciesdevblog.wordpress.com. You can expect to find the game there if I can't get something better set up in time...

I hereby dedicate the Frogglor species to E-lad:

I'm honored at the distinction, Q.
I hope this project gets legs and turns out wildly successful for you! Then I can go on promo tour with ya! I can be your advance man and line up the chicks and stuff.

Q, best of luck with it. It's been very clear what a labour of love this project has been, and I look forward to it being an enormous success.

I would probably still say most of the above even without the orbiting EMP cannons being trained on my house.

Awesome, Quasar! Good Luck!
