I'm now thinking of deleting the OS and installing windows XP. What do you think?

I'm a bit late responding to this, but your issue is with MS Office and not the OS. Replacing Windows 7 with XP will not solve your problems.

I think you're right. I've had an older version of word installed and it seems to be working ok so everything's good.
