A place for members to help other members with questions about how to navigate the forums, how to post, ect. Feel free to make suggestions here as well.

Yes, we can all read the FAQ, but sometimes the question either isn't covered or it just makes more sense coming from a fellow member.

For the record, none of the "Guests" bother me. I'd certainly prefer that they actually register and use consistent names, but I'm not for banning them.

Granted, Rufus and I have decidedly different points of view on interacting with fundie guests.

I don't think you were there for the guest the other night, Nohm. It was nothing but trolling, for hours.

You're right, I wasn't, so that might have been an exception (i.e., a Guest who is worthy of being banned)

OK, I found the link for how to modify chat so only registered users that are logged in can see chat.
http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/m ... in-t_85673
The post about "Can view mChat" permission to NO we can't use because we're running an older version of phpBB and it's not available.

First problem is the our phpBB install isn't a standard install and my knowledge of phpBB is very limited. I'll give it a try on my copied SMRT on my laptop. No guarantees I'll get it to work. WEM & Vagon, would you be able to offer advice if I run into problems? Maybe try to set up a dev version of phpBB on our server so WEM & Vagon can see it. Wouldn't be fully functional but hopefully will be enough to test this module install.

I created a new thread that's a poll that you can vote on this subject. I want to see if this is really worth the effort.

Well I thought I put up an ip ban, but I guess it's a ban for the forum rather than the chat.

That's correct.

A Villainous Villanelle
(by Weemaryanne)

SMRTForum Mini-Chat's a pleasant way
To pass some time, but for its major flaw:
It has no means to keep the trolls at bay.

A 'nymless Guest may troll, and bait, and lie,
Pester the regulars every which and way
(When Guests bait Rufus, 'tis a bloody day),

And not be held t'account. Is this the way
To use friendly cyberspace? No recourse known?
Must we not hope to keep the trolls at bay?

Oh, for a bit of code that shows the way
To cage, corral, expel or so constrain a Guest
That being a jerk means there'll be hell to pay,

But 'til such code be written, let members wait
While Forum Mods their cyberarts employ:
As Guests bait SMRTies all the livelong day,
Alas! -- we cannot keep the trolls at bay.
Of course truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense. (Mark Twain)
I try to be cynical, but I just can't keep up. (Lily Tomlin)

How to Shut Off the Trolls
By Froggie

On your computer you will find a button
when pushed all of a sudden
the troll is gone and all is well
So shut up.
